Investing in care: Eldercare scholarships help to shape the future

Angela Morehouse is passionate about leading teams and empowering them to deliver the best possible care to patients. A registered nurse for more than 20 years, Angela currently serves as Manager of Clinical Operations for two units at Island Health’s Gorge Road Health Centre, supporting patients in transitional care as they await long-term-care placement.

In September 2024, Angela took the next step in her leadership journey by enrolling in a Master’s in Health Management at McMaster University. She says the program is giving her the tools she needs to be the strongest leader she can be – benefiting both her team and the seniors in her care.

Thanks to the generosity of Eldercare donors, Angela – a recent recipient of the Jack Howard Award – can now focus on her studies with greater peace of mind.

“Thank you for your extreme generosity in providing me with scholarship funds,” she says. “The ability to further my education while having the financial burden eased through your donation is truly invaluable.”

As a single mother, Angela is deeply committed to setting a positive example for her children. “With the help of the Jack Howard Award from Eldercare, I can maintain my normal work hours and still spend precious time with my kids while I pursue my studies,” she shares.

The Jack Howard Award is one of several scholarships available to Island Health staff working in seniors’ care. Established in 1990 in honour of Jack Howard—a founding member of the Eldercare Foundation and a strong advocate for professional development in gerontology. Decades later, the award continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of care providers today.

Angela is expected to graduate in April 2027. “Thank you, Eldercare,” she says. “This truly is a wonderful boost.”

Did you know? Eldercare has several bursaries and awards available to staff. If you are working with older adults as a professional caregiver or first responder within Island Health, Eldercare may be able to help you further your education whether you want to take a course, attend a workshop, or present at a conference.

Eldercare Foundation scholarships provide a maximum of 50% of the tuition fee. The application deadline for two of our scholarships – the Kully Sekhon Memorial Fund and the R.S. Young Award – is on Sunday, March 1st.
