Barriers to Health Care Access Among Ethnically Diverse Older Women in British Columbia
Most of us take for granted that Canada’s universal health care system means equal access for everyone. But what if that assumption tells only part of the story?
Presenter Dr. Edith Munene, EdD, PhD, shares findings from her research project at the University of Victoria’s Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health examining how socio-economic status and gender-related disparities can influence access to health care for older women in BC.
Dr. Munene is a 2024 recipient of Eldercare’s Funke-Furber Gerontological Research Award with a background in global health, leadership, policy, and cross-sectoral consulting. In her research, she spoke with women aged 65+ from diverse cultural backgrounds and communities across BC who exposed some of the barriers to access within the health care system.
