Eldercare funds practical solutions to help Islanders age safely

“Eldercare’s support has made a significant difference for our facility and clients,” says Wendy Galbraith, Case Manager, STEPS Program. “Their generous donation of Sara Stedys has enhanced the quality of care we provide, ensuring our elderly clients receive the attention and services they need to maintain their health and well-being.”

Eldercare has a long history of providing mobility aids and anti-fall devices to long-term care homes. Now, with the current lack of long-term care beds, there are more seniors at home, in hospital, and in transitional programs who need support.

In partnership with Island Health, Eldercare is helping to ease pressure on the healthcare system by limiting time spent in acute care and supporting safe transitions from hospital to home or assisted living. For example, Eldercare recently funded a lightweight, portable wound VAC (vacuum-assisted closure) device for Saanich Community Health Services clients. This equipment enables a quicker and safer transition from hospital to home, promoting faster healing in a familiar environment.

More recently, Eldercare began supporting clients in Island Health’s STEPS (Short Term Enablement and Planning Suites) Program, located in the West Shore Lodge assisted living community. STEPS offers temporary residential-style care for individuals who are ready for discharged from hospital but need more time to recover or decide on their long-term care needs.

As the STEPS clients’ needs have grown more complex, the program reached out to Eldercare for assistance. In response, Eldercare funded practical support in the form of two Sara Stedy mobility devices, which support clients in sit-to-stand transfers—an essential part of maintaining mobility and independence.

Thank you for helping us play a critical role in supporting aging in place and enhancing quality of life for local seniors in need.
