May 1, 2024 – Eldercare is pleased to announce that it has made a $1M contribution to Canada’s first public, non-profit, long-term care village. Based on the concepts of a dementia village and set to open in Comox in July, Providence Living at The Views offers a new model of care that puts the needs of seniors first.
Since 1982, Eldercare has raised funds to enhance long-term care with innovative equipment, technology, and programming; support aging in place so older adults can stay at home as long as possible; and invest in research and education to improve seniors’ care everywhere.
“Partnering with Providence Living on this transformational model of care is an exciting step in our evolution,” says Tom Arnold, Eldercare’s Executive Director. “Over the decades we have relied on philanthropic support to improve quality of life for seniors in Greater Victoria. Thanks to the generosity and foresight of our donors, including an unprecedented bequest gift of $34M we received last year, Eldercare is ready to meet the challenges of our aging population across Vancouver Island.”
Eldercare’s mission is to enhance quality of life for seniors in need. “This includes supporting seniors in care today, and funding research that can improve care available to seniors tomorrow,” says Arnold. “This project does both.”
The Views project includes a five-year research study of the care village led by the Centre for Advancing Health Outcomes. The evaluation will provide insights to build more person-centred care villages across the province and beyond – as well as how the model could be implemented in existing homes. The study was a key motivator in Eldercare’s contribution.
“When it comes to moving the needle towards positive change, in our 40 years of experience we’ve seen that research is vital,” says Arnold. “Good ideas come and go, but good ideas backed up by research create new paradigms of care. If the research shows improved quality of life for seniors and reduced or defrayed costs for the health care system, then there’s no way that this won’t get adopted elsewhere.”
