Older adults are increasingly using all kinds of tech, but with the adoption of digital tools comes more opportunities to fall prey to scams and fraud.
As a trusted consultant and technology teacher, Dave Basset, also known as “Compu Dave,” knows digital safety. “Most social media experiences are safe, but seniors may be especially trusting, making it easy for older adults to become victims of bad actors,” shares Dave.
When it comes to social media like Facebook, Instagram, X, Blue Sky or other similar platforms, Dave says the key is to be cautious about anything that seems out of the ordinary.
Compu Dave’s top tips for staying safe on social media:
- Ensure you have your privacy settings set to strictly limit the ways that strangers can interact with you. This is usually found under settings and privacy options.
- A strong password and two-factor authentication can help keep your accounts from being hacked. Consider using a password manager to help you keep track of everything.
- Government agencies won’t message you about taxes, request banking information or other official, private matters through social media. Don’t engage!
- Be cautious about ordering items advertised on social media. Check things like the dimensions, reviews and other supporting information before proceeding, or stick to well-established retailers only.
