Investing in leaders who care

After 25 years in women’s health and ambulatory care, Qualicum Beach resident Kristen Magel has stepped into a new chapter of her nursing career – one she didn’t expect to love as much as she does. In 2023, Kristen transitioned from hands-on nursing into a leadership role as Clinical Nurse Lead at Eagle Park, a 75-bed long-term care home operated by Island Health.

“I have always loved bedside nursing,” Kristen says. “But it’s such a privilege to have the time to build relationships with residents and families, to be part of their lives and hear their incredible stories. It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with long-term care.”

To deepen her knowledge of gerontology and strengthen her leadership skills, Kristen recently enrolled in the Long-term Care Management course at BCIT, the first course in a diploma program focused on long-term care leadership. The program provides practical insight into long-term care management, evolving best practices, and the policies and legislation that help ensure the highest quality of care for residents.

Kristen was the grateful recipient of a Jack Howard Scholarship from Eldercare Foundation, which helped offset the cost of the course. The scholarship is one of ten Eldercare education awards available to Island Health staff and medical staff pursuing education or conference opportunities related to seniors’ care.

“It means so much to have this learning supported by Eldercare,” Kristen says. “The course is helping me become a stronger leader, which has a positive impact on my team – and ultimately on resident care and quality of life. People who come into long-term care are often very vulnerable, so it’s essential to understand the rules and legislation in place to protect them.”

Kristen is already sharing what she’s learning with her team of health care assistants, licensed practical nurses, and registered nurses. “This knowledge transfer empowers the whole team with new skills and confidence, which directly benefits residents at Eagle Park,” she says.

“Long-term care can sometimes feel overlooked,” Kristen adds. “I’m deeply grateful that Eldercare focuses on seniors and those who care for them. It is truly an honour to grow old.”
