SUMMARY:Advantages and Challenges of Aging in Place
DESCRIPTION:Most older Canadians want to remain in their homes as they age\, yet only one in four feel confident they’ll be able to do so. Aging in place offers many advantages\, but it also comes with practical challenges. This workshop provides nine focused checklists covering the essential considerations that can help you plan today for the lifestyle you want tomorrow. \nParticipants will also have time to exchange ideas and share effective strategies for aging in place\, so please bring your experiences and insights. \nDebra Swain is a retired teacher with extensive experience leading professional development workshops. In retirement\, she has devoted much of her time to sharing information on health\, wellness\, and safety with seniors. Learning alongside older adults has offered her plenty of “food for thought” about the realities of aging in Canada. \nHer interests include gardening\, swimming\, walking\, and reading—and she finds that retirement is\, indeed\, quite lovely. \nClick here to register.

Increasingly\, healthcare providers are recognizing that social connection\, purpose\, physical activity\, and community involvement play a vital role in healthy aging. \nThis presentation introduces the concept of social prescribing—an innovative approach that connects people with community programs and activities that support overall wellbeing. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of how community can be a powerful part of staying healthy. \nJames Fraser is a Community Health Promoter with Island Health whose work focuses on healthy communities\, health promotion\, and the social determinants of health. He has worked in mental health and substance use services for nearly a decade and has contributed to research\, policy\, and community initiatives that support health and wellbeing. \nJames holds a Master of Arts in Social Dimensions of Health and is completing a Master of Public Administration at the University of Victoria.
