SUMMARY:Building Community Support for People Seeking Medical Assistance in Dying and Their Families
DESCRIPTION:Medical assistance in dying (MAiD) has become an increasingly common part of end-of-life care in Canada. Today\, approximately one in ten deaths within the Island Health region are MAiD-related\, raising important questions about how we support people who request MAiD and their families. Working in partnership with people with lived and living experience of MAiD\, the Island Health MAiD Program\, and community organizations\, Dr. Caroline Variath’s research has identified important gaps in the health and social supports available to MAiD patients and families. These gaps are often experienced by people who are socially isolated\, lack access to primary care providers or other healthcare services\, or are unaware of community resources that could address their needs. \nIn this presentation\, Dr. Variath will share key findings from her research and discuss plans to develop a community-based support and navigation program that helps people connect with health and social services\, strengthens support for families\, and help reduce pressures on healthcare teams. The overall goal is to improve access to health and social supports and enhance quality of life of those who have requested MAiD. \nDr. Caroline Variath is an Assistant Professor at Vancouver Island University and a coordinator with Island Health’s Palliative and End-of-Life Care Program\, supporting patients who seek Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD). She is the recipient of a Health Professional Investigator Award from Michael Smith Health Research BC\, that provides protected time over five years (2025-2030) to advance her research program. Dr. Variath holds a PhD in Nursing from the University of Toronto\, with a collaborative specialization in Bioethics. Her program of research focuses on the intersections of ethics\, health equity\, and end-of-life care. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Addressing Inequities in Dementia Care Through Community-Led Approaches: A Focus on BC’s Chinese Community
DESCRIPTION:Canadians living with dementia – and those who care for them – need more supports that truly enhance their quality of life. For individuals from ethno-racial communities in Canada\, accessing these supports can be especially challenging due to systemic inequities\, including racism\, language barriers\, and cultural stigma surrounding dementia. \nIn this session\, Dr. Mariko Sakamoto will share insights from an innovative\, nationally led project focused on developing meaningful quality-of-life supports for people living with dementia and their care partners in underserved but equity-deserving communities across Canada\, with a focus on Black\, Chinese\, and South Asian communities. \nDr. Sakamoto’s work centers on BC’s Chinese community\, where she has partnered closely with community members to co-create supports grounded in lived experience. Her approach emphasizes respect\, cultural relevance\, and long-term impact\, with the goal of translating research into real-world practice. The session will explore how identity\, culture\, and personal experience shape what effective and respectful dementia care truly looks like. \nDr. Sakamoto is an Assistant Professor of Nursing at the University of Victoria and a leader in community-based dementia research. She is the founder and director of The Dementia Action Co-Lab\, a member of UVic’s CARING Dementia Collaborative\, and holds several leadership roles within dementia organizations across BC. Her work bridges research\, community voices\, and action to improve quality of life for people living with dementia and their families. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Older Adults in the Emergency Department: Experiences\, Gaps\, and Better Ways Forward
DESCRIPTION:This educational session is designed for older adults\, caregivers\, healthcare providers\, and members of the public interested in improving emergency care for aging populations. \nLed by Dr. Mariko Sakamoto and Dr. Jae-Yung Kwon\, the session will explore how older adults and their care partners experience care in emergency departments (EDs). The presenters will discuss common system-level challenges and share human-centred strategies that can improve dignity\, trust\, communication\, and overall care experiences for older adults in emergency settings. \nDr. Mariko Sakamoto is an Assistant Professor of Nursing at the University of Victoria and founder and director of the Dementia Action Co-Lab. Dr. Jae-Yung Kwon is an Assistant Professor with the School of Nursing at UVic also. His research focuses on tailoring health services to promote person-centred care\, meeting the unique needs of individual patients with progressive or life-threatening conditions\, including cancer. \nClick here to register.
