SUMMARY:Communication and Dementia
DESCRIPTION:Changes in memory\, thinking\, and attention can affect the way people communicate as they age\, particularly for those living with dementia. Conversations may become more challenging\, leading to frustration for both the person with dementia and their family members or caregivers. Understanding how dementia affects communication can help build stronger connections and support more positive daily interactions. \nJoin registered speech-language pathologist Sue Decker for an interactive session exploring how communication works\, the impact of cognitive and memory changes on communication\, and practical strategies for supporting meaningful conversations with someone living with dementia. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on and discuss communication experiences in their daily lives. This educational session is designed to provide general information and practical tools; individualized diagnosis or therapy recommendations will not be provided. \nSue Decker\, M.Sc.\, R.SLP\, is a registered speech-language pathologist with more than 30 years of experience supporting adults with speech\, language\, and communication challenges. Her work has focused on helping individuals living with aphasia\, dementia\, and other neurological conditions maintain meaningful connections and participation in everyday life. Sue has also served as a clinical educator\, instructor\, and researcher at the University of Alberta and the University of British Columbia and has contributed to the development of innovative communication care programs across Canada. \nClick here to register.
